Jean Stafford

I am undertaking a four-year PhD programme in Mental Health funded by the MRC. I am supervised by Dr James Kirkbride and Professor Robert Howard at the Division of Psychiatry, UCL. My PhD is focused on late-onset psychotic disorders in those aged 60 and above.

Learn more about my research

My research is focused on characterising the incidence of late-onset psychotic disorders and investigating how incidence varies in relation to potential social and environmental risk factors using Swedish population data. I also aim to carry out a case-control study to explore the relationship between social isolation and late-onset psychosis.

Education

During the first year of my PhD I undertook three lab rotations. Along with a rotation at PsyLife, I completed two other three-month rotations:

1) Psychological Medicine Team, UCL Institute of Child Health, Supervisor: Professor Roz Shafran. I helped with study set up, recruitment, and participant screening for a study focused on the mental health of young people with epilepsy.

2) Developmental Risk and Resilience Unit, UCL Psychology and Language Sciences, Supervisors: Professor Essi Viding and Professor Eamon McCrory. For my project, I analysed fMRI data collected by Dr Catherine Sebastian as part of a study focused on the neural correlates of emotion processing in young people with conduct problems and high vs low levels of callous unemotional traits.

2014-2015: MSc [Distinction] Child and Adolescent Mental Health, Institute of Child Health (UCL).

2010-2014: MA (Hons) [First class] Psychology (The University of Edinburgh).
McGill University, Montreal, Canada – Third Year International Exchange.

Employment

During my undergraduate degree I held voluntary research assistant posts at McGill University within the Child and Adolescent Social Competence Laboratory and within the psychology department at the University of Edinburgh. I also gained clinical experience within the CAMHS Psychological Medicine team at Great Ormond Street Hospital during my MSc, and through volunteering at the Taylor Adolescent Programme in Montreal where I worked with young people with learning disabilities under the supervision of clinical psychologists.
